|Campus Food Bank Society at the University of Alberta is a registered charity that distributes food items and toiletries to all members of the university community in need. We define this as U of A students, staff, alumni and their children. As such, we are governed by a Board of Directors that represents all members of the University Community.
Were it not for the generosity of the University Community, faculties, departments, student groups, and countless individuals, we would not exist. Because of this community's remarkable generosity, we were able to distribute over 1200 food hampers containing enough food to feed over 2500 individuals last year.
1991 - The GSA (Graduate Students' Association) protested the doubling of international tuition fees by handing out one-time emergency food hampers. This event aimed to raise awareness both on campus and within the media of student financial struggles. To the surprise of the GSA, an overwhelming number of students lined up to receive these food hampers; food insecurity on campus was clearly more prevalent than anyone had realized.
The University of Alberta becomes the first post secondary institution to open its own food bank in Canada.
1992 - The Campus Food Bank is officially opened and run out of the GSA office.
1993 - The Sexual Assault Center became a U of A service and moved to the 2nd level of the Students' Union Building. At this time, the food bank moved from the GSA office into its current location in SUB 0-40J.
1995 - The Campus Food Bank became a registered charity requiring that we establish a Board of Governors. This year the food bank also officially became a joint service between the Students' Union and the GSA.
1995 to 2002 - The Campus Food Bank was now a registered charity and officially licensed to handle food.
2005 to 2006 - The Campus Food Bank gains independence from the SU and the GSA. Both organizations continue to hold positions on the Board of Directors and provide annual funding for the food bank, but the CFB is an independent service. The Board of Directors is responsible for creating new CFB bylaws and official policies.
2006 to 2007 - The Campus Food Bank became incorporated as the Campus Food Bank Society.
2007 to 2012 - The Campus Food Bank continues to meet the needs of our community because a well-fed campus is a well-performing campus.
|We believe that the university is a place to hunger for knowledge, not food.|
